2010 Ride
I loved the event. This new route showed me parts of Death Valley I was never exposed to before. Artist Drive was a nice treat. Also knowing that there is a 16 mile climb just 11 miles from the Furnace Creek Ranch is very good for future training. I've been doing the spring and fall double centuries since 2003. I like the diversity of this century route: Great climbs and being able to see riders continuously throughout the route.
I haven't done many organized centuries since 2004 because my training consists of solo centuries as I get ready for the 508. One reason I like doing doubles is so I can work on my nutrition strategy and of course my pacing. But this year my training time, and racing time are both limited. I'm really enjoying doing century routes instead of doubles. One reason would be less gear needed for a century as opposed to a double. I don't need lights, and the staff doesn't have to work the course for 18 hours. As far as training, riding a fast climbing century has plenty of training value and stresses my system just enough but yet I can recover possibly overnight and do another hard century the next day.
Another reason I'm diggin' centuries this year is I'm actually hanging out at the finish line and meeting riders and hearing their stories of their journey. When I finish doubles I am completely spent, as I should be, and don't have the energy to be social. I'm usually off in a corner just trying to recover from the 11 odd hours of punishing my body. You know riding a bike is supposed to be healthy but when I first finish my doubles I swear nothing about it feels healthy ;) - George Red-Eyed Vireo Vargas
Great ride! Have only done one other century in my life and that was >15 years ago. Only did the 100k but that was still a satisfying killer for someone who didn't train. Thanks to all the volunteers and staff. - Andrew Silva
My girlfriend and I just go home (Calgary, AB) from our trip last weekend and just wanted to let you know what a good time we had at the Hells Gate 100 and in Death Valley. The staff and volunteers were awesome. This marked my first event in about year and a half as I had ACL injury over a year ago and surgery last October. It was great to reach my goal of riding the full 100 miles and it would not have been possible with out the aid stations and volunteers. We hope to return again for future event, keep up the good work. - Darren Hirst
My first century and it was a blast. the support staff was great and the course was well worth the challenge. I'm hooked. See ya in the spring! - Todd Turner
AdventureCorps folks. I wanted to thank you for the suffer fest I experienced on Saturday. It was my hardest ride to date, but even after all the pain, suffering and mental anguish, I am left wanting more and harder. There is something about the Death Valley landscape, and challenging events like this that require something more of you than you are perhaps comfortable to give. I know I crossed a line I hadn't ever crossed before. I also wanted to thank you for the amazing support at all the rest stops. I was amazed at how patient people were with me when I kept trying to dig into the HEED and they had to keep reminding me that there were pre-measured cups sitting at the other end of the table. This ride is literally impossible without the help of you find folks. I will be back, you can bet on that. - Marcus Edvalson
Thanks to you and AdventureCorps for a great event this past weekend. I'd been out to Death Valley many times before by motorcycle, but this was my first time on a bike out there. What a different experience! This ride kicked my butt, and in the end, the course won, but I plan to come back next year or maybe October. - Errin Vasquez
Just wanted to thank you for putting on a great century in Death Valley. Even though I couldn't force my body up to Hell's Gate I had a good time and enjoyed our discussion on the side of the road. Every ride I fail at I learn something about myself. I already want to attempt it again and Happy Birthday. Good Job - Bruce Malm
I'm the guy whose tire and tube you changed around mile 95. Just wanted to say thanks again - you saved the day for me!! I was pretty tired at that point, and if that next tube blew again, I think I would have called it quits. I was really happy to be able to finish. You guys put together a really great route and my wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks again! - Evan Thomas
2009 Ride
The Hell's Gate 100 was terrific. The support and the route were wonderful. I enjoyed each of the check points. The checkpoints were all fully stocked with everything one could need and staffed by terrific volunteers. I personally used a fair amount of the extras that you provided at the checkpoints that are often not available including the sunscreen and the baby wipes. There's nothing like a clean face when times are tough. I greatly appreciated the ready availability of ice and the additional water stops on Daylight pass. I used the two additional stops and wish I had made better use of the ice.
Regarding the route, I loved it. I expected a hard day and was not disappointed. Yes, there were times on Daylight Pass when I was less than thrilled but the ride was billed as a challenge and I was happy to undertake it. The route provided terrific and memorable payoffs after each difficult section in terms of scenery that made each hard effort well worth it.
In sum, thanks for sharing such a wonderful route and for putting on a terrific event. - Thanks, Mike Beauregard, Addax 2x
Just wanted to say -again: Thank you very much for creating=making this happen. It was truly one of the hardest/longest 100 miles that I can recall in my life, ... but as you suggested, one felt worthy of accomplishment at the day's end. So, good day, long day, tough ride - but thanks to you and your team of support staff, you all made the rest and recovery stops very rejuvenating [I was especially impressed, and personally enjoyed the regular-no+frills ice-cold COKE at Ryolite, back to the basics - excellent !!]. Take good care, perhaps our paths may cross again on some future road. "Cheers" - Brendan & Denise Lee
This is by far the most interesting of the Centuries you've staged in Death Valley. The aid was good, the people friendly and helpful. The abundant ice was invaluable, especially for slugs out in the heat of the day. The pizza looked great, but I couldn't eat anything until my stomach settled down. The climb is exactly what I wanted to use to kick off a training season culminating in the Death Ride. I'll definitely be back, with my wife Pam and perhaps others. - Thanks, Ross Zimmerman (Tucson Trail Run Series)
Just wanted to say thanks to you and your staff for putting on an enjoyable ride. Your support stops were well stocked and the folk there were friendly and helpful. Good route selection! The climbing was more sustained than I expected, but it was well worth the effort. The ride took us through a variety of amazing geologic and flora displays - what an amazing place Death Valley is. The historic town or Rhyolite was a nice turn-around point, although I wish there were more time to look around the town (there were few other riders around at that point so I felt pressured to get moving; that little valley was a pleasure to ride though). The lack of traffic on most of the route was a real treat. It was one of the factors that initially drew my interest to this ride. Anyhow, great route. Anyhow, great ride! Thanks to you for making it happen for all of us who took part. I look forward to next year. And I'm considering the Shasta event this summer. - John Monroe
Loved Hell's Gate! Living in Denver, our cycling season is just starting and the first century of the season is always the toughest. We chose to make Hell's Gate our first of the season and it did not disappoint. Loved the route. I'll be 40 this year and for the first 39 years of my life I'd never been to Death Valley, but because of Adventurecorps I've now been twice in the last 6 months. Keep up the great work. - Doug Gray
Thanks for organizing a great event. You selected a phenomenal course with spectacular scenery - truly a unique experience. This was a very hard day in the saddle that came with great satisfaction in reaching the goal. - Sam Pfaff
Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus loving HG century. I really enjoyed the early climb to Artist's Palette, almost missed the turn to the rest stop, loved the supplies at the rest stops ESPECIALLY the dates, the friendliness of the riders and volunteers (as opposed to some other southern California centuries) and the extraordinary support that allowed me to finish the ride on fresh tires. It was tough--the 100+ degree temps at the end--but satisfying. - Thanks again, Aaron Lipstadt (who needed, and received, both front and rear tyres for his bike during the event)
2010 Ride
I really enjoyed the ride. Well done. There's never a bad reason to head out to Laguna. And Pine Creek is ridiculous. Just from looking at the elevation data from online gps mapping tools, I thought I had a chance at riding the climb fixed. I had no idea what was in store for me! I really have to return with gears! - Adam Rock Rabbit Bickett
I just wanted to thank you and your staff for a great ride on Saturday. It was a truly beautiful day, and an epic ride. And a couple of times during the day I ran into other riders along the route that brought up (without me asking) how well run the ride was, how nice the staff was, how good the food selection was, etc. Not a discouraging word. - Regards, Jack Blackbird Bochsler
Chris, you've outdone yourself. Since I did the first Death Valley Double it was always my favorite ride. I think it has now been replaced by Mount Laguna. The scenery, the support and the course were awesome. That dreaded third loop which needs a nickname will surely become a classic for anyone who thinks digging deep into their physical and mental wells is "fun". In the nearly 20 years I've been doing endurance cycling events that loop is arguably the hardest stretch I've done. I can see many of us coming back not simply to complete it but to reduce the number of times we have to come off the bike due to those grades. Finally, I don't know how popular it was with others but in the future if you continue to have chicken and rice at the end I will make that my first stop at the end. Great job as always. My brother and my friends are already talking about next year. - Ron Sparrow Shepston
Wow - THAT was EPIC! From the pre-event communication, to the on-course support and to the course itself and lastly but not leastly to the post ride food and atmosphere - this event was fantastic. It will be a quick sell out for years to come. That last loop was one for the record books in its difficulty. I highly recommend every rider that is looking for a real challenge they give this a go! - Cliff Clermont
Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to shake your hand and say thanks for an EPIC event on saturday. This was truly a GREAT course, with great support! The third loop was definitely no joke, and was a killer way to end the course. Ball buster for sure! Thanks again for a great race. - Ryan Denner
I just wanted to thank you again for an epic and amazing day on Laguna. I think it might be the best event i have ever participated in. The aid stations were excellent, timing well done, atmosphere positive (competitive but friendly) and course challenging; It was an inspirational day! I am so thankful you let me do it and already have fond memories of it. Also thanks for the nice jersey. I hope to get out there again and ride with you guys. - Take care, Drew Peterson
Thanks for creating such an epic event. Until Saturday, San Diego County really had no challenging cycling events until this one. Thanks for everything. - Take care out there, Jay Nielsen
Thanks for the great event -- the course was fantastic (if a little cruel going up Pine Valley)... - Kind regards, Andrew LeBeau
Just wanted to say that I had a great time yesterday. It was my first time down in that area and I can't wait to get back down there and explore some more. The ride was both challenging and rewarding at the same time. I only completed 2 loops, but I rode them at a faster pace than I did the 80 miles in Death Valley, so it was great day for me. Thanks to you and your volunteers for putting this on. Thanks again, - Errin Vasquez
Thanks for putting together a fantastic event. Funny how it's tough for many to complete, hard to imagine doing it again as you push to finish, yet it seems like fun in the days following the event. Should have been named the Mount Laguna Bicycle Challenge, because that was a tough ride. Very well supported ride with a fun group on a challenging course and Bill was great fun to have in customer service too. - Gregg Sprosty
Thanks for the great event. This was only my second organized event, and I found completing 2 loops very difficult but rewarding. - James Eitelberg
Hi, I had a great time at the Mount Laguna Bicycle Classic! - Thanks, Scott Boniface
I wanted to let you know that I had a great time volunteering. Thanks for letting me do that. I really hope that I will be able to ride Mt. Laguna next year. I also wanted to let you know that I heard tons of positive, glowing feedback from the riders. Almost everyone with whom I interacted had fabulous things to say about the ride, the organization, and the overall experience. - Thanks again, Kathy Stadler
Mount Laguna was probably the best route I have ridden. The after-ride dinner was great. I know a lot of thought and effort went into planning this event. - Thank you, Gary Brownlee
Thanks for a beautifully organized and beautifully scenic ride. The three progressively more difficult climbs with a bailout option on the first two, plus safe and easy descents provided something for everyone, although the third climb was suitable only for the truly masochistic. Your highly supportive volunteers were great too. - Andrew Gustafson
Thanks for the update and thanks again for a great event. BTW, if you had seen me doing my Quasimodo walk up part of that last climb, you would have had no trouble believing my age. I'm debating whether I should come back next year for a try at being your first 70-year-old finisher or just stick to the relatively easy stuff like Everest Challenge. - Andrew Gustafson (age 69)
Thanks for allowing me ride and participate in the pre-ride for the Mt. Laguna Classic last November. Like the pre-ride, I chose to make the actual event a double century ride - commuting to and from Pine Valley from Bonita, CA. Although I was slow and methodical on the first climb, I really got moving up Kitchen Creek. The first half of Pine Creek Road was powerful as I continued to work my way back up to what could have been a 7hr. 30 minute ride. Unfortunately, I bonked at the 18-22 percent grades and suffered some bad cramps and nausea. Thanks to your wonderful support, I was able to take my near hour off the bike, suck down some oranges and then very slowly lumber up the rest of the ascent. Although I was offered a ride to the summit, I adamently refused. I am 0 for 2 in 508s, and wanted very badly to get through my first AdventureCorps event. I was able to finish under 9 hours, barely ahead of the Swan girls!!! They are awesome!! After Picachu's Chicken Adobo, I actually made a rapid descent, breaking 3 hours for my final 50 miles back to Bonita. (Still not up to Drew Peterson's climbing pace....but I was satisfied) Hope to be back at the 508 within the next few years. - Greg "Great Dane" Sherman
You guys are awesome. You really ran a smooth event. A challenging route, great support, and a beautiful day. I'm already recruiting some friends to ride it next year. - Adam Pacal
I just wanted to thank you all for organizing and executing a truly epic and incredible ride! Once again, many thanks...and looking forward to next year's ride already! - Peter Sroka
Great ride. Overheard another rider at the local 24Hr Fitness who was bragging about it to his work out pals (his version was very colorful) down here in Rancho Bernardo. Sure to be one of the "monuments" on the SoCal calendar! - Janet Osprey Christiansen
Thanks for putting on a well supported event today! - Thank you, Scott Gilbert
Thank you for such an excellent event. You really do have this down to a science and you have an excellent group of people working with you. Thank you for blessing the girls with the jerseys and attention. They had a great time, and yes, they did Pine Creek without walking :^) Listed below is my Garmin Edge 705 data just for another reference on elevation. - Sleeping good tonight, Richard Swan (father of Moriah and Hannah)
What a stellar venue for a ride. Your support crews were awesome and always offering to help. Loop 3 was incredible. (So, were loops 1 & 2.) My brother Ron and I are already talking about training for next year's ride. (Including losing those extra pounds that aren't fun to climb with…..) When we finished, I was talking to Elizabeth, when my wife returned my call to ask me how it went. I said, "It was awful!". Or, something to that effect. Elizabeth was taken back and asked if we're coming back. I tried to explain that awful means awesome. You know what I mean. The more painful it is, the more we love it, right? - Thanks again, Mike Shepston
Great event! I had a blast, and hope to do more AdventureCORPS events. - Jerald Cook
Congrats again to you both on a wonderful inaugural event. This will be a "must" for us in Southern California in future years and will likely draw folks from far and wide. - All the best, John A.T. Young
Fantastic ride on Saturday! You've created a must-do, classic San Diego event. Thank you! It was great meeting you and doing my *first* AdventureCorps event. - Regards, Amy Snyder
Thanx, to Chris & all the volunteers. Great Ride! Stops were situated perfectly & people were positive. I had the 'honor' & distinction for earning the Red Lantern. When I passed by the park at 2:25pm I knew I was making a large comittment for the RL trophy, but it felt great anyway finishing a shade before 6 or whenever. - Tor Ueland PS Special thanx to Les of Cycopath Cyclery of Temecula for your support at the end...
Just got home and wanted to say thanks for letting me help out last week. I really enjoyed it. Kevin did too. We rode the Kitchen loop the next day and what a beautiful ride. Thanks again, see you at BW. - Tim Kjenstad, Mount Laguna volunteer
2009 Official Pre-Ride
"The pre-ride at Mt. Laguna was brutally awesome. The route was simple, no numerous turns to get confused. Just a few glances at the rout sheet and you're on your way. The three loops made it stress-free and a sense of security that everybody is close by. The views are amazing, specially on the first loop. The last loop made this ride very memorable due to its difficulty. You have to dig deep just to go over the next steep section on Pine Creek Rd. Whoo!!! This ride has all the elements of an "epic" ride: greatness and adventure. The Adobo Velo family and myself would like to thank you for inviting us. It's a pleasure and a privilege of riding with fine group of people. Thank you." - Francis Ignacio, Adobo Velo, Furnace Creek 508 veteran
"I thoroughly enjoyed the Mt. Laguna route. Leave it to you to come up with those killer routes that tap into the dark crevices of our brains that make us want to return to repeat the moments of agony, namely that monster hill at the end. I'm definitely coming back in April, so put my name on the list. Riding atop the mountains on what appears to be paved fire roads was really enjoyable. The three downhills were fun and came at the precise right times during the ride. Now, the two most difficult centuries I have ever done are connected to YOU, Hell's Gate and Mt. Laguna. What's next?
"The scenery was fantastic and the traffic, or lack of, was welcomed. The motorists seemed to be accommodating to cyclists. Kudos to your sag support, once again top notch cycling nourishment was provided, along with the hot meal at the end." - John Marino, the godfather of ultra cycling: Info | More Info
"This is a tough climbing century - the way they all should be. The views were spectacular throughout the ride. In particular, I've always enjoyed going around Lake Cuyamaca and seeing the meadow off to the right with the mountains as a backdrop. Kitchen Creek is by far one of my favorite climbs in all San Diego County. I love the closed gated section. It makes it so much safer and peaceful. If you haven't been on this climb before then just being able to discover this climb might make the event worth it for you. I can't believe out of all the times I rode to and from Pine Valley that had I never made the turn onto Pine Creek Rd. The third loop is the shortest but the toughest of the three. I like the fact that it comes last in the event as a way to really test your resolve! Let's set aside the difficulty of the climb for a moment and focus on why we climb mountains. The views from Pine Creek Rd. are simply amazing. It's so incredible to see nature's beauty. The Mount Laguna Bicycle Classic is going to be a great addition to the century options already offered in San Diego. It will appeal more to the rider looking for a challenge and likes to climb. One other great thing about this ride is that the traffic is significantly lower than any of the organized centuries or doubles I have done in Southern California." - George Vargas, four-time Furnace Creek 508 veteran (excerpted from his extensive blog report)
"The Mount Laguna Bicycle Classic is Southern California riding at its finest, and toughest: one hundred miles of mountain back roads and not a single stop light to break the rhythm of the fantastic scenery, from mountain pine, to desert cactus and chaparral. It's a challenge for the legs and lungs, but the scenery and space are all payback." - Dustin Sharp
"The ride was very polite. It allowed you to climb, at times up unrelentingly steep sections of road, and descend equally, giving something for all of us. I truly enjoyed the scenery, climbing through several ecosystems throughout the day, and seeing an area that I've never ridden in all my time in Southern California. It was VERY epic. I really enjoyed the 3 climbs with increasing difficulty; fantastic layout for the day. The repeated descent was difficult and required a lot of concentration. I really enjoyed it (50+ mph each time), but I really like going fast down hill. Overall it was one of the 3 hardest centuries in SoCal. The elevation gain is deceiving. It doesn't seem like you're gaining over 3k each loop, but when you do that descent, you are certainly losing it!" - Jack Lindquist, Team Swarm!
"The ride was awesome. I was very pleased not to have to descend Kitchen Creek or Pine Creek. Smart decision to have riders descend Sunrise Highway. This is my domain. I train up in this area all the time. I never knew about Pine Creek Road. I like descending Sunrise Highway and feel like I am riding down the introduction to the movie 'The Shining.' Reaching into the suitcase of courage, I successfully completed the Mt. Laguna Classic pre-ride, saving my best for the dreaded Pine Creek climbs with grades up to 20% in places." - Greg Sherman, Furnace Creek 508 veteran
"These are the most beautiful roads in San Diego County. I am ashamed to admit that I have lived in SD County for 25 years and this is the first time I have ridden Kitchen Creek and Pine Creek. Overall for the day, I saw more cyclists than motor vehicles; I counted 8 vehicles on the first loop." - Jack Bochsler, Furnace Creek 508 Veteran
"My concern was that I was going to feel like I wasn't getting anywhere by riding up to the same ridge three times. But I had never been to this part of California and was amazed and stoked on how beautiful and varying the terrain is and never felt that way. When you finally get to the ridge, the far side is open and vast and slightly desert-y, but you are in pine trees. California never quits. The descent was super fast and smooth." - Matt Desert Moth Ruscigno, Furnace Creek 508 Veteran and Vegan Cycling Blogger

Chris, Thanks for your focus on the needs of the Haiti people. I have found that when you give you will recieve two-fold. I like others have given through other local charities, but Chris you are dead on when you say we can and should do more. It is like being at the 121 mile marker of Badwater and you don't think you can do any more, but you dig deep. We all just need to dig a little deeper. Thanks, David S. Jones
