CORPScamp Death Valley
Spring 2010
Just wanted to drop a note and thank you guys for a job well done and a great experience during the Corpscamp Death Valley 2010. We enjoyed every day we spent from bicycling in the park to Yoga in the afternoons. It was a perfect vacation for us in one of the most interesting places in North America. Along the way we also met and made friends with incredible people. We will see you in the near future. - Aylin & Ali Albayrak
I had a GREAT time at CORPScamp Death Valley!! The people and adventures were lifetime souvenirs I will always treasure. I thoroughly enjoyed ALL the activities and appreciated the thought put in to blending cycling, yoga, hiking and the best comraderie. The support teams were awesome also and I especially appreciated the chance to "go for it" on the double century. Thank YOU!! What bliss that tail wind finally was! Hope to be able to join you all again next year! Hugs and warmest regards, Theresa Carrara
Now that I'm home (and sort of back to normal) I wanted to write you guys a note and thank you for a wonderful CORPScamp Death Valley. I was blown away (almost literally) with the landscape. Thanks for getting me out and seeing one of America's most beautiful national parks (I am seeing more of our natural environment with you than ever before). Great camaraderie at the camp and well organized as always. Elizabeth, thanks for the yoga (I still try to do more). And, a wonderful double on Saturday-my first one! All in all I had a great time and look forward to seeing you guys again (probably won't be until next year though). - Cheers, David Pacey, Taipei, Taiwan
Well what can I say but thank you from all three of us for a superb five days of cycling in a truly awesome (I know that word is so overused but it really does apply in this case) place. We arrived not knowing quite what to expect and were made most welcome by yourselves and the great bunch of people that you had managed to assemble. Everything was so well organised and we found our days were full of activities (never did manage to make it to the Ranger Programs though!)
Thanks goes to Elisabeth for introducing us to Yoga, I for one was very sceptical about its worth at the start but it proved to be somewhat of a revelation in that it alleviated so many of the aches and pains from the tough riding. You may have started something as I have been looking at classes in my area. Anyway thanks once again for a great start to this seasons cycling, all I need to do is build on what you guys have started and my big ride for this year should be a doddle (still think I might struggle a bit though!) Be sure to look us up if you are visiting the U.K and don't be surprised if you see us again next year, I'm still sore about having to leave before the Century and Double Century. All the very best. - Robin, Tony, and Michael
The Death Valley 2010 CorpsCamp was great. The beauty of Emigrant Pass was a reward for the 98 miles required. The brutal winds of the 108 day century day presented presenting Hiroko & myself a challenge which initially we never thought could overcome. But with help from Steve (Protoceratops) we did it! We actually believed Steve when he told us that at the junction the wind changed direction and would be at our backs! But we kept going and finished! Steve knew what he was doing! Elizabeth’s proficiency at Yoga and biking is an inspiration to us! Thanks for the opportunity. - Dick & Hiroko Lambert
Spring 2009
Thank you, for having me at the AdventureCORPS Camp and the Death Valley Spring Double Century! It was an awesome experience for me and I hope I was able to contribute to your events. It was also great to have conversations with you and to meet your parents. Death Valley is truly an amazing place and there is lots of history to discover! Thanks to Elizabeth for the Yoga classes they were awesome! - Thank you, Michael Emde
Thank you for an experience at CORPScamp Death Valley and the Death Valley 200 that managed to both capture the exceptional beauty of the landscape and offer an opportunity to enjoy the company of fellow cycling enthusiasts. I would certainly like to single out the contribution of Elizabeth and the restorative effects of CORPSyoga. I KNOW that I would not have felt as strong, refreshed, and healthy had it not been for Elizabeth and her patient instruction. I plan on continuing to learn more about yoga and will definitely continue to utilize it with my training. Big, BIG Thanks! …As for the rest of the camp, I had fun, rode hard, learned some things and met some inspiring folks! What else could anyone ask for? I recommend AdventureCORPS to everyone who wants to experience some ‘real life’ on and off the bike! Thanks to you personally, for creating these unique events and making them so memorable. You, your staff, volunteers and anyone and everyone associated with AdventureCORPS are truly 'Out There!' See you at The 508! - Best, Rob Treadwell
Thank you for a great week. I am a fairly laid back and low-stressed guy, but somehow this week relaxed me even more. Yes, almost 500 miles in 8 days was "relaxing." You brought together a great group of people, providing wonderful support, encouragement, challenge and fun. I look forward to future camps. - Simon Kann
Thank you, Chris and Elizabeth, for a terrific camp. Now, Mike wants to head to Shasta for that camp as well. Given it was my first time doing yoga, I wasn't sure what to expect. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised and certainly felt "looser" getting back on the bike each day. It was great to meet Michael Emde. He was certainly very approachable and it is no wonder that he has won the 508 the last three consecutive years. Every time I visit Death Valley, I leave with a greater appreciation for its beauty and serenity. I wish that I were coming back in October to race the 508, but am sure that I will still appreciate it as part of the crew. Thanks for continuing to put on events with such a focus on the environment and the athlete. See you at the 508 -- or, possibly sooner in Shasta. - Donna Nice
What a great time I had at the camp and really enjoyed being a "volunteer" for the ride on Saturday. Put me down for the camp again next spring! - Bob Hartman
That adventure in Death Valley still resonates three weeks on - helped by a wonderful image of the valley from Dante's View that serves as wallpaper on my computer. Thanks ever so much for a wonderful, stimulating vacation - it was a great escape from the hurly burly and came just in time for me. - All the best, Brian Christmas in Mississauga, ON, Canada
I’ve been rather remiss in thanking you for a great week in Death Valley. I hadn’t been there before, I’m sorry to say, but I can’t wait to go back. It was a great group of people and it was a pleasure getting to know both of you better as well. I’m planning to be there again next Feb and trying to recruit others as well. Elizabeth – let me know when your ‘yoga for cyclists’ CD is available! I’ll buy the first copy. I need it… Looking forward to seeing you again soon, Mark Ryan
Spring 2008
When I was in Death Valley for the Adventurecorps Cycling Camp I took a day off for sightseeing. The first trip of the day, right at dawn, was to Badwater where I set off across the salt flats for a ways towards Bennett Peak. There was no-one else around, a beautiful sunny, cool day, ideal for padding across the damp salt. After I got out on the salt a fair distance I paused to take in the valley in the dawn light. After a few minutes I was struck by what I could hear: Nothing. It was absolutely, totally quiet. I honestly cannot remember when, if ever, I can remember such a moment. I can be in some of my favorite, peaceful places, but there is always noise. It might just be the birds, God bless them, or water lapping on a boat or shore, usually some far-off vehicle or aircraft noise—there's always *something*.
As you may surmise that total silence made quite an impression on me, and it still does. It was both calming and disturbing at the same time. I do not know if I will have such an experience again. But I hope so. I am back in DV over Easter so we will see, but I am not sure that in our crowded world this may have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. - Cheers, Woofie Humpage
I liked this camp, because it gave me time to be in the vast Death Valley just cycling to my heart's content. As nerdy as this sounds, it gave me time to be at peace with my inner self, and realize that there is so much 'vastness' still to be conqured in life. That it doesn't matter who you are, what your social status maybe, but what you can do in a life time that defines who you really are...... I'm done being cheesy. Cycling therapy, gotta love it. Thanks, Chris, for letting me come, I definity know that this season is going to be incredible. This camp has given me the outlook I've needed, to be a inspiration for others living with Epilepsy, as well as being a Vegan athlete. I definitely know that I am pushing the limits as it is, and want to push my limits further than any Epileptic person my age would ever think imaginable. - Deanna Adams, age 19
Traveling from Oregon is such a long trip. It is great to be able to spend several days cycling in such a wonderfully unique setting. (Rather than traveling 2 days, riding 1 day of your century/double century, driving 2 days home.) - Joanne Heilinger
What a great opportunity to get away from the snowy Midwest and ride outside. February is about the time we snowbound masses are screaming to see sun and warmer temps, so the timing was great. The rides were fantastic, and the people were a blast. Chris and Elizabeth, you were top-notch hosts. LOVED the yoga! - Anna Boldon
The Death Valley camp was great, the support was just right and the routes gave us enough freedom to ride the amount we wanted. It was a great early season opportunity to do back to back riding and test your conditioning. I just wish I was there for another 2-3 days! Thanks to you, Elizabeth and the crew for putting together another superb AdventureCORPS event! Lets make sure it becomes a tradition. - Anurang Revri
Because I was not in either the 'fast group' or the 'slow group' I was almost always on my own out in the middle. I usually ride in groups, so being able to ride such beautiful routes alone and test my physical and mental abilities in an environment like Death Valley was a rare opportunity. I also liked being able to talk with much more experienced riders about their training programs, experiences, tips, etc. - Michael Wahlster
Thank you so much for the GREAT day at Death Valley. I really had a good time. - Hugh Murphy
The camp was great! I even had a couple of somewhat cathartic moments but best of all was the camaraderie. I feel like I made some friends I will see again outside of AdventureCORPS events. The camp ended up being more to me than a bike ride. I am gratified the activity of cycling attracts such decent people. I think the AdventureCORPS mojo contributes to that. I prefer moral support and interest in the lives and perspectives of others (particularly relative strangers) to competition and bib numbers. - Kirk Rhinehart
The routes were challenging and perfect for my goals and present conditioning. I wouldn't change them. I would rate Towne Pass as my favorite just because it was a huge accomplishment for me. The Dynamic Warm Up was great. My tight and sore back was relieved as well as my daily tight muscles. It was also an excellent venue to hear the daily schedule from you and get a feel for the day. - Martin Lyons
The morning group start provided an opportunity to meet other riders. I personally was looking for quiet time in the saddle by myself but it was nice to ride with other riders and share stories. The camp was exactly what I was looking for in a trip to Death Valley: social time, quiet alone time on the bicycle, great scenery. I'm getting back into long distance cycling after several years away and the theme of the camp - 'Where life moves forward' just said it all for me. - Richard Rayos
I wanted to thank you again for a great camp. The camp was great, well run, perfect support. Your support crew, fueling me up and encouraging me at 4000 feet towards Townes pass, will surely be one of my lasting cycling memories. - Harry Campbell
"The camp was a real blast and great way to meet others and fitness springboard for the season." - Joe Garza
CORPScamp Shasta
Summer 2009
We would like to say "Thank you so much for everything during camp in Shasta". We really enjoyed Yoga and riding in beautiful scenic with great people. You are so kind with nice hospitality, especially for us weekend riders. Yoga was great experience for us; we could not finish without Yoga. - Dirk and Hiroko
Summer 2008
You put on an amazing camp. It was professional and well executed and most importantly you infused such great energy into the rides. It is great to be re-inspired about movement / kinesiology / performance / life / adventure / passion. You were a great inspiration to me this past week, in ways that extend far beyond cycling. Thank your time, energy, passion and devotion. I think you've re-awakened within me my need for adventure and passion, which has waned a bit, it seems. - Kate Daniher
I really enjoyed the camp. The yoga classes were great !!! The results exceeded my expectations. It definitely helped alleviate some chronic hip pain. We all know we should stretch... but it takes time so we (ok, I) don't do it regularly.... making it a scheduled part of the camp made it easy and fun. As for the mileage, it was just right, I rode ~ 240 miles & climbed ~ 16,000' Wed-Sat, and was still able to do the full 135 with 17,000 feet on Sunday. Thank you !!! - Louis Durano
Jessica and I had a grand time. Thanks for giving us inspiration and a great introduction to the Mt. Shasta area. We started out a bit unconventionally, but hung in there for the full week’s experience. I’m looking forward to hearing of your winter plans. - Many thanks, David and Jessica Otey
JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes
2005 Ride
I participated in the JDRF Ride for the Cure last weekend in Death Valley. You all did a great job. - Thanks, Bob Karnak
I just wanted to touch base with you to tell you what a great job you did. I heard a lot of great comments and thought I would pass them along to you. I’m new to the ride, just bought my bike this summer, and have been having a great time on it! Thank you again for all that you do! - Stacey Chase
Your organization did a super job supporting and running that event! This was my first JDRF ride and also my first Century! - Chris Fish
Thanks again for putting together such a spectacular weekend! We've all been enjoying the pictures on line. If you visiting Madison in the near future, our team celebration party is on November 7th, of course it goes with out saying that we'd love to have you join us. Many thanks again for everything. - Deb Davis
What a terrific job you do for JDRF!
From your dry sense of humor that Wendy and I enjoy, to the photos posted throughout the day, to having your mom and dad working a checkpoint—you really provide this event with something special. - Enjoy some biking, Bob Hanisch MA CDE CSCS
Thanks for putting on a great ride this weekend for JDRF! We had about 70 riders there from SE Wisconsin and will raise about $350,000...about 1/3 of the revenues for the ride!! I almost was not able to participate this year due to a bike crash this summer and 4 hours of surgery, but I was thrilled to be there and experience perhaps the best event we have ever had out in Death Valley! I just wanted to also mention that several of my riders appreciated your presentaton on Friday night. You provided good information with humor. Hope to see you again next year!!! - Wendy Hanisch
Just wanted as a rider to thank you for managing the ride so well. You really do a first class job, and it was such a great ride. Second year for me. - Best wishes and thanks again, James J. Englert, Esq.
2004 October Ride
I have ridden in the JDRF Death Valley Bike Ride for 5 years now, and each year it just keeps getting better. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication to this incredible ride—it really makes a difference. - Many thanks! Kay Maas
2003 October Ride
I participated in and completed the "new" century course at the JDRF Ride for a Cure in Death Valley on October 25th, 2003. The effort, attitude and wonderful work of you and your corps truly amazes. We at the JDRF are so fortunate to have you and your Adventurecorps team produce this event. Being new to cycling, I consumed all the information I could find on riding in centuries. This lead me to the Adventurecorps website. The training information was invaluable. I am now trying to plot my way to riding in a double, hopefully with you next fall in Death Valley. I will also be riding again in the JDRF Ride to Cure. I hope to recruit a much larger team from Chicago to ride next fall. - Best Regards, Jon Peabody
2001 October Ride
We live in Queensbury, NY and wanted to follow our fiends, Tambrie and Tim Alden, from Glens Falls, NY as they journied to Death Valley. This sight is amazing!!! We were able to find our friends in several photos and you have done a super job. Thank you so much. It brought us a lot closer even though we were thousands of miles away!!! - Sharon & Jim Piper
