For me and I'm sure others it is much more than riding our bikes and suffering. It is a chance to explore ourselves and our limits within the community of ultra cyclists and others. There are not many races where the participants cheer each other on with "Great job, keep it up!" as they are being passed. This was my seventh after six solo races. Every one is different and I walk away - more like stagger - with so much appreciation of what I learned. This time I suffered with baseball-sized swelling of my lower jaw from a bee sting at about mile 15, a 13-hour Tronra-Furnace Creek leg punctuated by severe stomach problems not relieved by rapid exit of stomach contents and those Shoshone-Baker headwinds which seemed intent on wearing me down to a whimpering baby. As my brother, Mike, and I crossed the finish line all the many assertions of "I'm never doing this again" became empty words replaced with "We want to do a family 4x next year then a Hall of Fame solo after that". Thanks again. I'm deeply appreciative of all that you and the fantastic staff of Adventure Corps do to pull it all together. - Ron Sparrow Shepston Thanks for a great race. I had a “fear of the unknown” going into it, which finally subsided when I started stage 8 and felt really good on the bike. I realized it gave me an opportunity to learn a lot about myself. So much so, I’m starting my training, now, for going solo next year! (guess I need to tell my brother, eh?) - Thanks again, Mike Shepston (2x Sparrow) I had another incredible experience this year at the 508 - I still had major difficulties, and again took far longer than I would have liked, but it was again an enormously rewarding journey of personal challenge and discovery. Thank you for all the work you do to put on this event! I'm still in the process of sorting through my experience and writing up the race. I'd just like to say what an incredible, indelible experience this was for both myself and my crew. I wore the jersey this past weekend at Levi's Gran Fondo and from the comments I received, a lot of cyclists appreciate what an achievement finishing this race is. I am still stoked and wondering how am I ever going to top this experience. Of course it was very challenging; but with my children and close family there supporting me, this was a sporting event filled with opportunities for living out life lessons. The rider-crew shared experience was the highlight for me. Again, the race organization was excellent. The other riders and crews were all supportive of each other. If anyone is looking for a challenge beyond a double century, or want to share an uncommon experience with a special group of friends, this ride is like few others. You'll undoubtedly see me again, either as a competitor or crewing for someone. Thank you again for orchestrating an exceptional event! I could see and appreciate all of the hard work that went into this. As a first time participant, I was impressed and pleasantly surprised by the spirit of the event, the clear/extensive rules, the safety emphasis, the route, the staff, the swag, the intimate size, the totems, the national athem, the respect for minimal impact, the quick video, etc. I hadn’t realized how special this event was. Admittedly, we were a 4x team and so it was nothing like the challenge of the 2x-ers or solo-ers, but we did have a wonderful time and the windstorm made it all the more ‘interesting’. Our participation this year has already earned Hall of Fame status in my personal book of memorable experiences. I’m not sure if it's the euphoria talking or what, but I did find myself considering graduating up to one of the 'real ultra' classes for next year (or beyond). I'm likely, however, to return to my senses. Thanks to you and your crew for everything. I hope to see you again. For me, making it through Death Valley in those unimaginable winds and then having to come back 8 hours later and climb Sheephole and then the last 20 miles with a headwind taught me many things about myself, especially about having to deal with pain and discomfort and the pressure of having to succeed. And how physically and mentally tougher I am than I thought. I know my teammates had similar experiences and I know I speak for them here as well. Together as a team it was an extreme effort that brought us closer, when it had the potential to do just the opposite. To share this with them as well with our fellow competitors was an honor. Your staff was friendly, helpful, and tireless. Your help bringing the water bottles to Dawn when our van broke down was very much appreciated. The fact that John Marino himself assisted her while we were undergoing repairs was very special. Since returning home, I have begun looking for other rides in Death Valley, as I would like to see it in the daytime, and without the gale force winds. You and your crew demonstrated the utmost in professionalism and care for all riders and the space that we covered and touched. Rarely, does the average person have an opportunity to explore this great expanse in California, and for us it's our backyard. If it weren't for this race, I potentially would've missed some great local landscape. Also, all the other teams out there were magnificent. None of us needed (luckily) support out on the road, but I felt (as a rider) that if I was in any kind of duress that any of the support vehicles would have helped me just like we would've helped someone else. Yes, this is a race, but it seems like the comradery and eagerness prevails. Anyway, I just thought you should hear it from another person that this race really makes bicycling / racing / adventure (you put the descriptive words) a better experience! I had a chance to chat with you while I was riding Stage 2 and one of your other workers while climbing Salsbury Pass on Stage 4. I really enjoyed the care and encouragement that you and all the race officials exhibited. You all do an incredible job and put on an incredible event. Virtually every time I passed a support vehicle, be it on the road if I was overtaking a rider or pulled to the side when they were playing leapfrog, I received encouragement from the crew. My taste buds thank you for every pack of energy gel that tasted like gourmet dining and every sip of water that was better then the last. However, my back side isn't talking to anyone... Oh, and congratulations on the best magic trick I've ever seen. You turned Twenty Nine Palms into America's most beautiful city for a day. Ask any finisher as they crested the final rise that offered the first view of Twenty Nine Palms if that wasn't the most beautiful city they had ever seen. The 508 was lots of training, major planning, a chunk of money and well worth all of it. I will be highly recommending the 508 to my friends and clients. You caught up to me on Townes Pass at a point when I was having stomach issues and if I was less then cordial I apologize, I was just trying not to puke in front of you. By the way the photos you snapped of me at that point are quite funny. Great race, and thanks for the hard work to make it great. I also wanted to thank Shanna Armstrong (Dik-Dik) and her team for the help they provided us during the race. We had missed the Badwater turn and were moving down the road when Shanna’s support vehicle comes racing up to us and flags us down to tell us we had missed the turn. As we turned around, we could see Shanna’s lights in the distance stopped, waiting for her support crew to return. The ten to fifteen minutes she lost to help us was greatly appreciated, and we’re glad to see it didn’t affect her first place finish. It’s hard to loose even fifteen minutes when you’re only at the midpoint of a long race and can’t see what the upcoming miles will bring. Before, during, and after the race we saw a number of situations where a team or an individual was taking the time to help someone else. This is what true sportsmanship is and it reflects well on you and your team who has done a great job of attracting this type of competitor. This was mine and Pete's first attempt at a 2-person race, and we both feel that it's easier to just ride the whole thing solo. We struggled with the abrupt starts and stops with no warming up or cooling down, which caused our legs to stiffen. We did find out that we enjoyed the leap-frogging and even had a good time doing it! You should see the video we made from the "Kitten cam." Hysterical! One of the high points for me was in stage 4. We had a few issues that kept us from being real fluid at our transition from TS 3 to 4, and we watched several other teams come and go while we stayed there. So Pete told me I needed to pass 8 people/teams to regain where we were among all the riders. All I could see in the darkness of the desert were the flashing caution lights of other riders ahead of me. One by one I began to pass teams and solo riders. By the time I got to the time station, I had passed 11 groups! What a momentum builder that was! I got the opportunity to briefly speak to each person and say "hi" to their crew driver and realized that not everyone was as cheerful as I was. ;o) I'm going to write up a story about our experiences and send it to you. Thanks again for such a great event. All the extras really made it a special races (the pre-race meeting, medals, t-shirts, goody bags, photos, audio interviews, webcasting, professional staff, etc). We are extremely impressed with all of the racers, pace cars, crews, and even one of the race officials. All of the pace cars were courteous and moved over when we approached from behind, the racers stayed fairly close to the shoulder. The markings on the SAG vehicles were very visible and the names for the racers are an awesome idea. Thanks for the cycling inspiration, so much so we are going to attempt to put together a four person team for next year. Will see. I never been to Death Valley, in such places as Baker, Shoshone or 29palms! I could never imagine and feel the sensations while racing/ride into Desert terrain and Hot weather! Every year, the ever-growing field is a clear statement of how well directed and organized is the race! FC508 could be easily one of the Best Ultracycling events in the U.S.! A pity not to take part in it! Funny how things go, on the ride back to LA after DNFing, my crew chief told me, that because of my outlook on things etc, I would probably get some value out of reading one of Steve Ilg's books....later that night in the hotel room we see that he was in the race....! Like I said, funny how things go. Thanks for a great race, will definately be back next year. Entire support crew signed on that very day for next year. I think you really stepped up the tone of the event with the pre-race presentation. The entire program added the "epic" dimension that the riders know is out there, but that many of the rest of the audience are not aware of. The theater venue, the music, the video, the personal presentations...wow, it was like "The AdventureCorps Two Wheel Oscars!" Anyway, we had it all... Pre-race enthusiasm, fast riding, slow riding, crew/rider miscommunication, slow riding, rider implosion, slow riding, rider resurrection, slow riding, crew panic, slow riding and then towards the end, we had some slow riding, followed by a minute of post-race enthusiasm and finally unconsciousness.
