April 21, 2012 Mount Laguna Bicycle Classic Results

2013 Date: April 20, 2013: Mark Your Calendar!

We are pleased to announce the results and images from the Mount Laguna Bicycle Classic, the newest AdventureCORPS cycling event, featuring 101 miles with 10,000 feet of climbing and three different ascents of San Diego County's Mount Laguna! Participants climbed San Diego's highest point via Sunrise Hwy from the north, via the fabled and car-free Kitchen Creek from the south-east, and via the little-known and truly epic Pine Creek drainage from the west. There are just three stop signs and NO traffic lights on this incredible route which starts and finishes in Pine Valley, CA! The 2012 edition featured perfect weather (a bit warm) with 185 participants.

Special Thanks is extended to Francis Picachu Ignacio, a four-time Furnace Creek 508 solo finisher, was up all of Friday night, cooking the super popular adobo Filipino food (adobo chicken, adobo pork, rice, and curry vegetables) for all the riders, then he spent all of Saturday working the finish line and keeping his home-cooked food warm and ready to serve. And now you know why his LA-based cycling club (which is open to riders from anywhere) is called Adobo Velo! (Several Adobo Velo riders participted, and several volunteered. They are a regular fixture at AdventureCORPS events: riding, volunteering, or both.)

Thanks to all the riders and volunteers for making the 2012 Mount Laguna Bicycle Classic a huge success! We look forward to sharing this experience with you again in 2013! Between now and next April, we plan to offer some excellent training and adventurous riding opportunities in the Mount Laguna area. We will post those to our Blog, as well as our Facebook page and Twitter feed.

We also hope you will join us in October this year for Furnace Creek 508, and/or the Death Valley Century, Ultra Century, and Double Century.

Finally, we thank the United States Forest Service and the County of San Diego for issuing the permits and allowing us to host this event on the roads which they oversee. This is a spectacular route and we thank them for taking good care of this superb cycling region!

Awesome, Unsolicited, Totally Appreciated Feedback!

I want to thank you for putting on an amazing event. This is the best century that I know of and the support was superb and helpful. A big thanks to all of them! Aid stations were well stocked and strategically placed. The course is beautiful and scenic with minimal traffic and the riders were friendly yet competitive - a perfect combination. Thanks again! - Drew "Turkey Vulture" Peterson

This is a unique race. The escalation of intensity up the three different assaults on Mt Laguna provided a unique challenge in terms of pacing and willpower. It was a great time to be out with friends. This event had the right balance of earnest competition and camaraderie. It is telling that riders maintained their smiles despite some of the toughest climbs around. - David J Bruemmer

You know how to organize large groups of people. I didn’t see any confusion or panic out there. The course was delightful as always. The vegetables and rice were amazing at the finish line. Thanks a ton for the time split around mile 55 on the way to the Kitchen Creek check point. That was very motivating. Drew is in absolute maniac! I’ll try to press him longer next year. Good luck with your next events. - Sean "Crow" Cuddihy

Mt Laguna was really hard and you were right it gets harder as the day goes on. It was so hard I might have to do it again. Mt Laguna is a classic. - Allen Hwang

The best keeps getting better. In a few short years, the MLBC has become THE destination century in San Diego County. And this instant classic got even better in 2012. This year, you had so much ice (and icy water) at each rest stop that volunteers practically begged us to fill our bottles full of cubes. Every single volunteer I encountered shared a friendly smile and knew exactly what to do and say. And, of course, the route remains the most gorgeous and challenging of any century I have ever done. Finally, it is always great seeing you out patrolling the course, snapping photos of all of us, and giving encouragement. Bravo Chris, bravo! - Amy Snyder (Note: Amy is the author of Hell on Two Wheels)

Chris, that ride is just a great event. I've done the first two loops twice now and have just enjoyed the heck out of it both times. The 3rd loop does sound a bit over the top, but the first two are terrific--just the right amount of challenge mixed with pretty countryside. - Bruce "Coonhound" Gungle

Thank you very much for a great event. This was my first year riding and through you guys did a great job. I am Cat 3 racer here locally and consider myself to be in great condition, but the last lap just about killed me. I definitely brought the wrong gearing and was in over my head thinking I could make it up those climbs on lap 3 in a standard chain ring set up. Thanks again. Cheers, Matt Mangum

Great Ride yesterday…. Everything was perfect. I had a wonderful time suffering. Thanks. - Dan Whitaker

It was a great day of cycling. Perfect weather and scenery. Well organized. Good job all around. I have already recommended it to a few people. - Daniel Powell PS I recommend a mountain bike on Loop 3.

I would like to congratulate AdventureCORPS on a fantastic ride. The MLBC is definitely a challenge, but well worth the effort. Many thanks to all the volunteers. Every aid station was well stocked and attended by helpful concerned volunteers. - Jan Hughes

I've compiled the timelapse video for the photos I took as a volunteer at Red Tail Roost. It's almost 10 hours of pictures compressed into 30 seconds. We always have so much fun meeting the cyclist coming through these rides. Red Tail Roost is special where in we get the pleasure of seeing riders two or three times through the day. The riders start to feel like old friends as they are coming in for their final descent. After hearing all of the glowing remarks about the ride, we just might have to ride it next year. This was a great event. Thank you so much for organizing it. Cheers and I'm sure we'll see you soon, Jesse Kretschmer and Jessica Chan

Thanks for the great ride. Nice crew out there. I had a really nice time and have recommended this event to all my friends. Thanks! - Chris
