Dear Friend in Sport and Spirit:

We have been pleased to recognize Challenged Athletes Foundation as an Official Charity of AdventureCORPS since 2002. CAF was created on the belief that people of all abilities should have the opportunity to pursue a life full of physical activity and of sports. Be they recreational or in pursuit of a gold medal at the Paralympic Games, people with a physical disability are limited only by their access to funding. Since 1994, CAF has raised more than $19 million – allowing the Foundation to satisfy thousands of funding requests from challenged athletes in all 50 states and 10 countries.

Eighty-nine cents of every dollar raised by CAF provides funding and programs that get challenged athletes into the game. Whether it’s a $2,000 handcycle, helping underwrite a $15,000 running prosthetic or arranging enthusiastic encouragement from a mentor who has triumphed over a similar injury, CAF’s mission is clear: give those with the desire to live active, competitive lifestyles every opportunity to compete in the sports they love.

So I'm asking you to join me in making dreams come true for challenged athletes all over the world. Be it big or small, your donation will directly help a challenged athlete regain their independence or pursue Paralympic dreams. To donate to CAF online, click here. On behalf of myself, and the Challenged Athletes Foundation, I thank you for your generous contribution.

Aloha and mahalo!
Chris Kostman

Five times now (2002-2005 and 2007), I joined less than 30 other triathletes along the shores of Oahu each August to rediscover the journey of triathlon on the original route of the original Ironman. The event is "Ironman Revisited" and it is a benefit for the Challenged Athletes Foundation. We swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and then run a 26.2-mile marathon, non-stop in one day!

I do this race in the spirit of my all-time favorite personal philosophy fountain and television show, Magnum, p.i. You see, almost everything one needs to learn in life was covered in that program. Heck, Magnum even did the Ironman in one episode, solving a case in the process. Magnum, p.i. ran originally from 1980 to 1988, but the show, the wisdom, the philosophy, and the lifestyle, they all live on today! As such, I wear full Magnum attire on Oahu each year: Hawaiian shirt, Detroit Tigers hat, and Ray-ban Aviator sunglasses.

This race is a reenactment, so to speak, of the original Ironman Triathlon, back when it was held on Oahu, only a hundred people or less did it, and no big business was involved. Nowadays, 1500 or more people do the Hawaii Ironman on the Big Island each year, but not this event. It's special.

Ironman Revisited was created so that we could return to the very roots of triathlon and reignite the team spirit and commitment generated when finishing a triathlon meant bringing your own support crew and competing on roads that aren't closed. It was more about finishing than it was about winning. Same thing today.

There is, however, a much bigger purpose behind doing this particular event, something even bigger than acting out my Magnum, pi fantasies or retracing the footsteps of John Collins, Tom Warren, Dave Scott, and the other Ironman pioneers of 1978 through 1980. Ironman Revisited was created as a benefit for Challenged Athletes Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides grants to athletes with physical disabilities so that they can purchase handcycles, wheelchairs, artificial limbs and even help pay for training and competition fees. With your help, we have been making dreams come true for kids, teenagers and even adults with a renewed life of physical fitness and sports. To date, we've raised nearly $150,000 for this effort! Let's keep going!

August 12, 2007 Ironman Revisited

Aloha! In 2007 I competed, for the fifth consecutive time, in the Ironman Revisited Triathlon on behalf of Challenged Athletes Foundation. Held Sunday, August 12, 2007, it was a remake of the original Ironman on the original route in the original format. Even the legendary Dave Scott, the six-time Ironman champ who first won the race on this very route in 1980, was there. But Ironman Revisited is much more than a race or an exploration of triathlon’s origins, it’s a fundraiser for CAF.

I am absolutely thrilled that we raised $32,378.38 for the cause this year! I also completed the course solo with the help of a tremendous support crew. August 14, 2005 Ironman Revisited

We finished! Team Magnum entered as a relay team in 2005, completing the course in 13:39. More importantlly, we raised $35,000 for CAF! We (swimmer Shoko Paul, cyclist Chris Kostman, and runner Laurie Streff) had a blast raising funds and then completing the course as a three-person tag team. It was another wonderful opportunity to support a special cause and to join in the international language of sportsmanship. Special thanks to Shoko's friends, Ryan McManus and Siobhan Johnson, for supporting us throughout the day! I finished! Splits: 1:32 swim, 6:41 bike, 5:54 marathon, plus transition times = 14:35 and 7th place of 16 solo entrants. Most importantly: We raised $11,196 for the Challenged Athletes Foundation! Thanks for your support, everyone!

It was a tough day out there: choppy water, super windy ride with an hour of rain, plus, of course, high heat and humidity. I'm not complaining, but it was the comparatively worst weather in three years. Plus, I only trained for four weeks total this year. But I really enjoyed the day, in large part because of my awesome crew of Jay and Shoko Paul and Laurie Streff and the inspiration of the great cause.

I finished! I was third overall (compared to 9th in 2002) with a time of 13:02 (compared to 13:25 last year). It was far, far windier this year than last, plus the bike course, which I redesigned, was 8.5 miles longer than in 2002. My crew of Bill Koppenheffer, a 2000 Badwater Ultramarathon finisher, and Joel Sampson, a CAF-sponsored local triathlete, were fantastic!

My splits were: 1:20 swim / 6:03 bike / 5:20 run, plus the transition times.

I had no problems at all and felt great all day, though I was working very hard. It was mega windy all day during the swim, bike, and run. Most importantly, we raised over $15,500 for CAF!

August 25, 2002 Ironman Revisited

I finished! It took me 13 hours, 25 minutes and I was 9th of 24 solo entrants across the finish line. It was a tough day with a rough swim, very windy ride, and trafficky marathon. But I'm really happy with my performance, thanks to the inspiration of this event and its beneficiaries, plus the support of my awesome support crew. Most importantly, we raised $12,590 in the process!
