Woodrup Giro-Touring 1983: Fixed Gear Road Conversion

This bike has an interesting history, but more than anything, I am so very excited to finally start riding it! This frame was made in 1983, I believe. I got it from the Cycles Olympic bike shop in Diamond Bar, CA in 1988 as a trade for a Nishiki time trial frameset that I had from RAAM the previous summer. I had lusted after this frameset hanging on the wall for several years, then jumped at the chance to get it in 1988. But at the time I thought it was too big for me, plus I didn't have any use for a "touring" frameset. I'm not a weight freak, but this frame and fork weigh seven pounds. Built up, as you see it, this is a 21 pound bike, the same as my RB-1, Kestrel, and Ron Stout, all equipped with gears.

Anyway, the light bulb went on in my head recently that this frameset would make a perfect fixed gear bike, so here it is! I had the wheels made by my friends at Mill Valley Cycle Works and I assembled it with what are basically my all-time favorite parts from any era, old or new. The headset is as is from 1988. Everything else is brand new, aquired by me over the years or recently from Rivendell. The gear is 39x15, which makes a 69" gear. I'll put a 13 tooth cog on the other side of the Kogswell hub to provide a taller gear for flatter rides. As it is, I climb all the mountains around here on it and I just love it! If anyone can provide anymore history on this bike, I'd love to hear from you. Click any thumbnail to see it full-size, then scroll through with the arrows.
