I'm very pleased and excited to report that there are A LOT of Furnace Creek 508 veterans competing in the 2006 Race Across America, which began in Oceanside this weekend. Among the field are Kenny "Fast Truck Gecko" Souza and Tinker "Mexican Wolf" Juarez, the first and second place finishers in last fall's 508, as well as the 2004 champ, Marko "Tweety Bird" Baloh, along with other 508 veterans such as Shannah "Dik Dik" Armstrong, Mitch "Lemur" Lesack, Guy "Mongolian Wild Ass" Wells, James "Shrike" Kern, Dino Nico "Dragonfly" Valsesia, Charlie "Lizard" Liskey, Steve "Scorpion" Winfrey, Joe "too many totems to list" Petersen, Tim "Werewolf" Woudenberg, Patty Jo "Snowkitty" Struve, Rob "Langur" Lucas, David "Donkey" Jones, Jean Marc "Chartreux" Velez, Fabio "Bunny" Biasiolo, Kevin "4xHammerhead" McNulty, 1998 solo champ and 2003 2x champ Dan "Mountaingoat" McGehee, Bernie "Basenji" Barge, Robert "2xMahi Mahi" Baldino, Larry "2xMahi Mahi" Brenize, Rich "Skeeter" Kondzielaski, Richard "Reindeer" Ruge, Ed "Black Bear" Kross, PLUS Guido Kunze, a Badwater Ultramarathon veteran! (Apologies to any other 508 veterans I still somehow missed!)

I want to give an extra special "bravo" to Team Type 1, an eight-rider corporate team, which is competing with the goal of raising one million dollars for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, as well as Team JDRF, a four-rider, two-tandem team that includes 508 veteran Tim "TwoCan/Poodle" Skipper, which is also racing on behalf of JDRF. As many of you know, here at AdventureCORPS we are pleased to produce the biannual Death Valley Ride to Cure Diabetes on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

I also want to wish the best of luck to my buddy Scott Needle of the four man Team 2CURE-HD, which is racing to raise money and awareness for Huntington's Disease Society of America. Below are thumbnails for my pix from Oceanside. Enjoy!
