Chris with John Howard, one of the greatest cyclists in American history, then and now. He won gold at the Pan Am Games, won the Ironman in 1981, took second in the first Race Across America in 1982, broke the drafting, land-speed record by riding a bicycle at 152 mph, and has won dozens of national titles on and off road on a bike. Back in 1984, when Chris started racing ultramarathon events, John was a fixture in those races and was very helpful and inspiring to Chris and others.
